American Online, commonly called AOL, is a global advertising-supported Web company, with display advertising network in the U.S., a substantial worldwide audience, and a suite of popular Web brands and products. The company’s strategy focuses on increasing the scale and sophistication of its advertising platform and growing the size and engagement of its global online audience through leading products and programming. AOL originally went public in 1992 and grew to become the largest Online access and portal company on the Web. AOL is best known for its online software suite, also called AOL, that allowed customers to access the world's largest walled garden online community and eventually reach out to the Internet as a whole. At its prime, AOL's membership was over 30 million members worldwide, most of whom accessed the AOL service through the AOL software suite.
