What is quicktimecheck.ocx?

Part of QuickTime by Apple

What is it?

QuickTimeCheck Scriptable Object is an activex control used by Apple's Quicktime image and video suite. QuickTimeCheck is used to determine if Quick Time is currently installed. QuickTimeCheck is integrated into Internet Explorer and when visiting a web page that embedds a QuickTime video or audio file it will automatically attempt to load the QuickTime plugin.

What if I disable QuickTime?

If this is disabled then QuickTime will not be able to determine if a web page with a QuickTime video embedded can play in the browser. If this is the case you will see a broken QuickTime icon where the QuickTime video should be displayed.
Description of quicktimecheck.ocx from Apple
A powerful multimedia technology with a built-in media player, QuickTime lets you view Internet video, HD movie trailers, and personal media in a wide range of file formats. And it lets you enjoy them in remarkably high quality. QuickTime is integrated with Mac OS X, but was once an optional component during installation for earlier versions of Mac OS. QuickTime for Microsoft Windows is downloadable, either as a standalone installation or bundled with iTunes or optionally with Safari.

How is quicktimecheck.ocx loaded?

Safe for scripting control - quicktimecheck.ocx has a CLSID (globally unique identifier) of {DE4AF3B0-F4D4-11D3-B41A-0050DA2E6C21} with and identifier of CLSID\{DE4AF3B0-F4D4-11D3-B41A-0050DA2E6C21}\Implemented Categories\{7DD95801-9882-11CF-9FA9-00AA006C42C4}. Safe for scripting is a Windows policy that disables the Internet Explorer security prompt for Windows Installer scripts. It allows Web-based programs to install software on the computer without notifying the user. By default, when a script hosted by an Internet browser tries to install a program on the system, the system warns users and allows them to select or refuse the installation. This setting suppresses the warning and allows the installation to proceed.

When a program is initialized, it can receive data from another program for initializing its state. This is a potential security hazard because the data could come from an untrusted source. Programs that guarantee no security breach regardless of the data source are considered safe for initialization and are registered as such.
