What is a PC virus?
A PC virus is a small application that spreads from one PC to another PC and that interferes with PC operation. A PC virus may corrupt or delete data, use an e-mail application to spread the virus to other PCs, or even delete everything on the hard disk.
PC viruses spread by using downloads on the Internet or through email or instant message attachments. PC viruses can be hidden in illegal or pirated software or in other files or applications that you may download online.
A PC virus infection may cause the following problems (Note, These problems may also occur because of ordinary Windows functions or problems in Windows that are not caused by a PC virus.):
- The PC stops responding, or it locks up frequently.
- The PC runs slower than usual.
- The PC crashes, and then it restarts often.
- Applications on the PC do not work correctly.
- New icons appear on the desktop that you did not put there, or the icons are not associated with any recently installed applications.
- Antivirus software is disabled for no reason and cannot be restarted.

What is Scareware and Rogue Security Software?
Rogue security software, also known as "scareware," is software that appears to be beneficial from a security perspective but provides limited or no security, generates erroneous or misleading alerts, or attempts to lure users into participating in fraudulent transactions. Scareware and rogue security software will try to make you think that your PC is infected by a virus and usually prompt you to download and/or buy a "antivirus" removal product. The names of these products usually contain words like “Antivirus,” “Shield,” “Security,” Protection,” “Fixer,” so they appear to be legitimate. They will often run immediately when downloaded, or the next time your computer starts up. scamware and rogue security software can prevent legitimate applications from opening, including Registry Editor, Command Prompt, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari, Google Chrome and other web browsers, email clients, instant messaging clients, media players and entertainment software.
Rogue security software might report a virus, even though your computer is actually clean. The software might also fail to report viruses when your computer is infected. Inversely, sometimes, when you download rogue security software, it will install a virus or other malicious software on your computer so that the software has something to detect.
Rogue security software designers create legitimate looking pop-up windows that advertise security update software. These windows might appear on your screen while you surf the web. Some typical error messages or pop ups you may receive may contain:
- Your computer is infected!
- This computer is infected by spyware and adware.
- Trojan detected! A piece of malicious code was found in your system that can replicate itself if no action is taken.
A good sign that the web page or application is a rouge product is that when you try to close the browser window it will continually pop up warnings similar to:
- Your computer is infected! They can cause data lost and file corruption and need to be treated as soon as possible. Press CANCEL to prevent it. Return to System Security and download it to secure your PC.
- Spyware Alert! Your computer is infected with spyware. It could damage your critical files or expose your private data on the Internet.
It is strongly recommended that you don't download or purchase any kind of software that advertises in this manner.
