What is it?

Samsung Kies is a software application used to communicate between Windows PCs, Samsung mobile phone and tablet devices, usually using a USB cable connection (though wireless LAN Kies connectivity is now possible using some devices). Kies connectivity is via USB cable, wireless LAN connectivity between a Samsung device on which the Kies Wireless Android app is running, and any Windows PC running the Kies full version.

Startup files (user) run - kies.exe is registered with the run identifier 'KiesPreload' and the execution command 'C:\Program Files\Samsung\Kies\Kies.exe /preload' in the Windows registry HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Run keys are startup registry keys that are used to launch an application automatically when a user logs into Windows.
Autoplay handler - kies.exe is typically associtated with identifier name of KiesCDOnArrival with and identifier of SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\Handlers\KiesCDOnArrival. Autoplay will scan removable media, when it arrives, looking for media content types (music, graphics, or video). When a removable media arrives, Windows determines what actions to perform by evaluating the content and comparing it to registered handlers for that content. An application will register a handler for Autoplay events associated with a media type.
