Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an Internet-standard protocol for managing devices on IP networks. Devices that typically support SNMP include routers, switches, servers, workstations and printers. SNMP exposes management data in the form of variables on the managed systems, which describe the system configuration. These variables can then be queried by managing applications.

SNMP provides the ability to send traps, or notifications, to advise an administrator when one or more conditions have been met. Traps are network packets that contain data relating to a component of the system sending the trap. The data may be statistical in nature or even status related. Service - snmp.exe runs as a background Windows service called 'SNMP' (Servicio SNMP). This is a system service that is installed with the Windows operating system and protected with Window's File Protection. This service runs as the SYSTEM account with extensive privileges on the local computer, and acts as the computer on the network. Servicio SNMP runs as a program that can be started by the Service Controller and that obeys the service control protocol. This type of service runs in a process by itself.
