How does regedit.exe run?

Process - regedit.exe is an instance of a running program. This 32-bit program executes with the privileges as the currently logged in user account. regedit.exe is executed by the process explorer.exe (Windows Explorer by Microsoft).

How does regedit.exe start?

Shell open command - regedit.exe is typically associtated with identifier name of regedit with and identifier of regedit.exe %1. A Shell Open Command allows for an association of a file extension and a program. This association allows an application to be run when the icon or a context menu item is clicked upon in the Windows Explorer window.
Startup files (all users) run - regedit.exe is registered with the run identifier 'SysSearch' and the execution command 'REGEDIT.EXE -s C:/WINDOWS/iexplore.reg' in the Windows registry HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Run keys are startup registry keys that are used to launch an application automatically when any Windows user logs into Windows.
